1892Aaron Camp Johnston & Milton S. Johnston form A.C. Johnston & Son Coal Company in Joliet, IL. The company's main focus is road building and coal/oil/lumber service. Eventually, it evolves to be named Johnston Roadbuilders.

1942Owners Starr and Charles Johnston form a partnership with brother-in-law Bill Howard and call it Rockford Blacktop. Bill Howard is president.

1965Bill Howard purchases the company and Rockford Blacktop continues to grow in size and scope of services.

1970The Irene and Cunningham quarries are acquired and electrical construction is added as a Rockford Blacktop service. Bill Howard Jr. becomes president.

1980Chuck Howard becomes president.

2002The company is turned over to Nate Howard.

2005Rockford Blacktop acquires Ragnar Benson Construction.

2009The company is renamed William Charles Construction.

2018William Charles Construction is acquired by Infrastructure and Energy Alternatives (IEA), ensuring continued growth and synergy for decades to come.

2020William Charles expands to Southwest and establishes offices in Nevada and Utah.

2022Acquired by MasTec and are now part of the organization's Clean Energy and Infrastructure segment.
